How long is a disney vacation club membership?

I'm interested in signing up but i woul like to know if it is a lifetime member ship or if there is an expiration date. How long is a disney vacation club membership?
Disney Vacation Club points do expire depending on the resort. The initial cost is over $16,000 for the minimum amount of points and there is a yearly maintenance fee. Mousesavers has a lot of information on the DVC here:

It is a huge investment that should be investigated fully before purchase.
It varies depending on which Resort you buy into. Ownership in a new resort/vacation club offering can be as long as 50 years. Ownership in some of the older vacation clubs will be shorter based on the original offer date. As part of your ownership you can sell your ownership (after Disney is given first right of refusal) , you can rent out and you can even leave it in your will to heirs. How long is a disney vacation club membership?
We definitely want to get a DVC membership, and even if it's only 50 years, that's plenty for us. I have looked into this a lot and can't wait until we make our purchase. Something you might want to consider is a DVC resale. You can make a smaller initial purchase, such as only 50 points, to really get an idea if it's for you. They are much cheaper than going directly through Disney, and you can buy a smaller contract. Check out http://www.dvc-resales.com/, they are a very reputable reseller. Also go to the DVC forum on disboards.com and read that for a while. You get to read other people's trip reviews, hints, ideas and suggestions. It's a great way to get many of your initial questions answered.
