Why do my Parents HATE Me?

Before judging me, please read my entire message.

I am a 30 year-old woman currently living at my parents until I can get a job that fits My needs. As an artist, I struggle every day with being understood by people and the communities around me. I'm a writer. My parents do want me to start looking for work, because apparently me helping out at home just isn't enough. Even though I don't pay rent, food, cell phone (I'm on the family plan- Dad pays it), cable or internet, I DO do things like answer the home phone to take messages for my parents (If I'm home), lock the door behind my parents in the morning when they go to work (If I'm up, I sleep late a lot), and collect the mail to take upstairs. But this doesn't seem to impress them much.

So I interviewed with a Staffing agency in Chicago. They were very impressed with my resume. A college graduate, I wrote for a National Paper and also was an Entertainer for Disney Cruise Line. Sadly, I am now unemployed. The interview on the phone went well- the guy spoke in very good American dialect and sounded almost like Tom Cruise. He invited me to come interview for the Staff Agency. His name is Greg by the way.

When I arrived, An African American came out of his office and greeted me. It was Greg.

"Hello, how are you this afternoon?" Greg asked.

"Wonderful, hi Greg. You know, when I spoke to you on the phone, I swear I thought you were white." I laughed. Greg sort of nodded but in a polite confinement. Before I interviewed with him, I had to take a typing test %26amp; three stupid Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point exams. Man were these hard! I type a lot, but I use my MWord program for basics, nothing fancy like the questions the exams asked you to perform. On top of that, I'm a Mac user and this was on a Dell Pc.

After the test, while waiting for my results, Greg interviewed me. We laughed and had a great time going over my career goals and past experiences. He seemed pretty impressed with my past work experience. I felt for sure he would start throwing my resume at clients in no time. His last question to me was:

"Gail- where do you see yourself in 5 years?" I thought about it and then answered very straight forwardly-

"Right where you're sitting. Exactly in your position. I plan to have your job Greg. In 5 years." I smiled confidently, because I had read in a magazine somewhere that this sort of confidence often tickles the person interviewing you. Greg, however, did not seem tickled. His expression was now similar to how he had reacted when I told him he sounded white. He thanked me politely and then said someone named Crystal would be saying hi to me. Wonderful, I thought. Another person to make a lasting impression on.

Crystal, a large and boisterous white woman in her late 40s, came in holding some papers.

"Well your typing score was 95%. And your net WPM is 62. You actually were typing in the high 70s but we adjust for mistakes. So that's very good."

"Awesome sister!" I exclaimed.

"However, your other scores were not so good. You only got a 54% in Word, and then a 35% in Excel and a 14% in Power Point."

I explained to Crystal that the secretary had told me if I didn't understand a question I could simply bypass it all together. Since I never use Power Point or Excel, I skipped the majority of the questions. The ones I DID answer came out correct, for the most part. Crystal was not understanding. She told me this didn't matter and that clients want to see high scores. I told her "Why can't you just find an entertainment host job for me?"

The agency told me to come back in a week or so after brushing up on my skills and retake the software tests. My typing score was fine, they said. Why can't they just get me a writing job then? I never utilized Excel or PowerPoint at the Newspaper company I worked for, and it was the Tribune.

I got home and started crying to my parents about how unfair the Temp Agency was and how it wasn't my fault I didn't know the programs. My mother consoled me for about 2 minutes, and as I continued to howl she told me rudely to either change the subject or go to my bedroom. That she was not going to assure my confidence anymore. I told her she was a B*tch who didn't support any of my dreams, and then my father yelled at me to get out. Why did this happen and why are Temp Agencies so unfair? Why do my Parents HATE Me?
Huh.

After reading your so lengthy article, I would like to share some points for a job.As you know that in market there are job crises.I agree that you have very good skills, but on other hand you must see what was the job requirement you gave the test and interview. That was like a typist job, for this your typing score is very important.

You must know the job description before you apply or go for interview. You should try for the job that matches your past experience.

Once you get a good job your relations with your parents will be fine, I believe.

Wish you a successful and happy life.
Grow up get a job and get the he'll out of your parents house they must be sad that you are so old and still living with them.. It's sad really.. Your so lazyWhy do my Parents HATE Me?

its frustuating seeing her go nowhere and still having the life here so maybe thats whats wrong idk good luck!
You live in a dream world at 30. Your folks spend $2,000 on you just letting you live with then with almost no compensation. Not trying with a crappy job. You need a job even if it a minimum wage job or a pee-on job. You must show skills that an employer can depend on you no matter what.

From what you wrote I would never hire you. In real life you have to have skills that kick ***. You are never entitled to anything in life. Everything is earned. Your words made you sound very immature.

Work on your software skills. Your skills should be double that of what you said for someone starting a job. Learning is power.

Your folks and the temp agency was 100% fair. You just need to understand why and do something positive about it.
