My Mom want me to pay Rent, Why?

Before judging, please read my entire question.

I'm 28 years old. I have a college degree and have been living in my own apartment since I was 21. I recently got hired to work on a cruise ship as an Entertainment Host but I did not like ship life or my duties as it was too overwhelming, and resigned after only 5 weeks onboard (though believe me working every day with no day off felt like more then 5 weeks). With no place to go my parents were nice enough to let me move back home. Mom gave me cable in my room, added me to the family cell phone plan, told me I could help myself to anything to eat in the house.

A week has gone by and today my mom sat me down and told me when I finally got a job that she needed me to pay her $450.00 a month for rent. What the hell! I JUST got back. My brother, 26, has been living rent free with her for years. Mind you she did pay my rent during college while she didn't with him, but still. I feel a little hurt that she suddenly is saying she expects me to pay rent. I understand Im 28 and an adult, but everyone goes through hard times. I'm not planning on living with them forever, just until I get back on my feet. She did tell me gently that she loves me and knows I am meant to continue as a performer and wants me to succeed and that I'll be happier actually moving out of the house and back into an apartment of my own instead of paying her rent. But then how am I supposed to save money?

Working for Disney Cruise Line was just a nightmare and not what I expected. I sacrificed a lot to get the job including getting out of my lease, but it wasn't for me. I just feel depressed and angry. My parents have paid their mortgage off for the huge house they have, they can afford to let their son live for free a few months. It just makes me quite upset- though I only agreed to my mom and told her I would pay as soon as I got a job. It still angers me.My Mom want me to pay Rent, Why?
i pay my mom rent . it shows mom that i'm a responsible person. it helps her out. your mom pay for college until you got a job . but you own her. she help you out and now you have help her out. when you got a job and move out on your own then you should thank your mom for the help and pat her back for what she done its only fair. i rather pay my mom rent then pay for a high rent i can not pay for. better help your parents keep a house then to lose it . many people are losing their home because of this economy. i rather save my parents home then losing it. money does not last forever . so i you want to move out that's fine. but helping your parents is the better deal. saving your home that you grew up on its better. i know it anger you. but things are changing until this economy gets better its better to stay there and help them out. and when you find a job .find something you like and keep it .their will be a lot of people behind you wanting your job. its hard to save money and other things .but you have to do whats important to you
Do you have any where else to go? Maybe a friend or something? I would try to find someone that won't make you pay rent, let alone that much. That way you can save up more money, and get your own place faster. You could maybe even find low income housing in your area that could help you also.My Mom want me to pay Rent, Why?
That's America for you, 18 and out the door. In most other countries, families live together. The average 30 year old lives with their parents in Japan.
She is trying to teach you responsibility, or what.

Kinda strange though.

If I were you I'd find an other room to rent. No good with relatives. Specially with crazy ones.
Its called responsibility. If you can't handle the rent ask her if she could some how lower it or maybe even let your brother pitch in to make ends meet:)
this is crazzy. why is she askin u to pay rent? talk to ur mom
Ok that is crazy that she wants you to pay that much for rent now i would understand if she asked for like a hundred but not $450 thats just crazy and your brother living here and aint paying nothing just's just CRAZYER! I wouldnt pay that much to live with your mom i would go stay at a hotel untile you can get a real place!
I wished I could move back home with my parents and just pay rent again! Jeez! You are lucky! As for your brother, shame on him for not offering to pay your parents rent. It's the least he could do! You just show him up when you start work again and actually pay your way and sleep with a clear conscience at night. If the rent is too steep for your salary, just negotiate. Good luck!
it sounds fair to me. i understand that the job you had wasn't what you thought it would be. an adult would have dealt with it. Its called life. Everyone hates their job. if they put cable in your room and are covering your phone, you should pay rent. And if they aren't making your brother, then 1, like yu said he paid his own in college, 2, is he contributing in some other way?
Maybe it is because of what you posted 3 days ago.

Why did I get FIRED my first day?
Before judging me, please read my entire question.

I was hired a an Entertainment Host for Disney Cruise Lines. This was a MAJOR opportunity for me! I mean I was going to be able to travel, make money and make connections. I was so excited I resigned from my old job of 4 years and also sold my apartment, sold my furniture and basically gave up everything. My contract was to last 6 months. I was on to something major.

My parents drove me to the airport where I would be flying from Ohio to Florida. They kissed me goodbye and wished me luck. I got on the plane and got to Florida in under 2 hours. The first order of business was to be checked in by the Disney faculty, who greet all new hires in the airport before driving us to our hotel. The line was really long and when I was waiting I was already hot, annoyed and impatient to get my luggage. It was FINALLY my turn and the woman checking me in was named Nancy. She had blonde hair and looked to be about 41.

"Hi, what's your name so I can check you in?" She asked me.

"Gale. Gale Hubbard. And it's a boy name, not a girl name." I said annoyed.

"And what position were you hired for?"

"You should ******* know that, GOD what a dumb *****!" I yelled at her because I was annoyed having to wait in line with other crew members and I was annoyed that the Orlando Airport was so crowded with annoying families and children. I took the anger out on her. It turned out Nancy was the Director of Youth Activities. She also was not pleased about my outburst.

I was terminated right there and then. I hadn't even started day 1 of work yet and they fired me at the airport. Disney booked a flight for me to fly to Ohio in the next hour I was at the airport. When I landed in Ohio I called my parents and told them what happened. I had never heard them sound so angry. My mom thought I was joking. But when I took a cab home and showed up with luggage and a much needed place to stay, they were quite pissed off. My Dad told me I was a big fat disappointment and my Mom refuses to speak to me, except when she has to yell at me to do the laundry or take out the garbage. I've now been living at home for 3 months with no job. Disney won't return my phone calls when I try to explain what happened and no other place will hire me.

Why did this happen? I mean, come on I waited for this job for over 7 months and gave up everything!
