Before judging me, please read my entire question.
I got a call a week ago from Delta Airlines to interview for their Flight Attendant position. If I was good enough for a second interview, they would fly me to Atlanta. Well I figured with all my experience, I would be a shoo-in. Not only do I have a Bachelor of Arts degree, I ALSO have over 4 years experience as a Facilitator Tour Guide at a world famous museum, and performed for Disney Cruise Lines. I have a **** ton of experience working with the public. And on the latter, I was professionally trained in safety, and even earned a certificate.
The lady who interviewed me on the phone appeared unimpressed as I rattled off these accomplishments, and remained poker toned. I was then asked numerous questions about how I would react in certain situations. One of the questions was "What do you do if a guest asks to go to the bathroom but the pilot has the fasten seat belt lit?" I simply said "Well I would calmly tell them they couldn't due to safety regulations, but if they needed further assistance I would see what I could do." Like, WHAT THE **** else was I suppose to say? When asked about how I handled safety in my past job, I glorified the response with how I was a Traffic Controller aboard the now 5th biggest Cruise Ship in the world (Disney Dream), and had to escort guests to their lifeboats.
Apparently this just wasn't good enough for lame Delta Airlines, because three days later I got an email telling me unfortunately I did not pass the interview and they had no position for me at this time. Bullshit! Something is up? Can someone please tell me what I did wrong or if my resume just wasn't doing it? Are they expecting people with Masters Degrees and more then 10 years customer experience? I mean I've been working with the public since I was 18- and I'm almost 29 now. What gives? Why didn't Delta Airlines Hire Me?
If you go to www.delta.com. all the flight attendant positions they are currently recruiting for require a foreign language. Do you have any of the required skill?
My guess is that they were pre-screening for future opportunities.
But to be honest, as a frequent business traveler similar to George Clooney in Up in the Air. I think that Flight Attendants have to have good customer service skills but I don't think it is a customer service position. I also don't think escorting passengers to lifeboats for their pre-pushoff training, displays a significant amount of safety capability.
Delta lists "work in a time sensitive environment %26amp; effectively handle stress that is associated with meeting deadlines %26amp; managing unexpected change" as one of their major requirements for the position. As I read through your qualifications, I don't see anything related to this, among your skills. I also don't think you come across as much of a team player which is another major requirement for this position.
OR on 2nd thought - maybe you didn't get the job because you didn't do your research before the interview and you have preconceived ideas about the position and are clueless about how times have changed = The average age for flight attendants for the major airline (non-commuter airlines) is 42 years old. They have typically been on the job for more than 20years.
- All the flight attendants that were onboard US Airways Flight 1549 which landed in the Hudson River were in their 50s = they admit to having hips a bit wider than they use to be and bellys not as flat as they once were, and hair that needs a little help to not show their age.
