Before judging me, please read my entire question.
I am 29 years old and currently am living at home with Mom %26amp; Dad. I am doing so because I quit working for Disney Cruise Lines as a Entertainment Host due to mental exhaustion and bad management. The job sucked, I hated the long working days and the small, cramped quarters I had with a roommate. I have been living at home now for 3 months- and please don't say "Well you're 29, you should be supporting yourself, blah, blah, blah." This is 2011, and the economy sucks right now, and its perfectly normal for adults to live at home with their parents to save money. At least I don't have school loans.
Anyways, Norwegian Cruise Lines has offered me a job as a Youth Programs Counselor. It pays less then Disney, but according to the director I am going to work less hours then Disney, and only have 13 other colleagues in the department since apparently less kids go on Norwegian then Disney. At first I was excited about a new job- and so were my parents, but then I looked into it and here are my qualms. Feel free to agree or disagree, or add insight:
1) It's a 6 month contract, and the pay is lower then Disney. So I won't be banking as much, even though I'll have no bills or living expenses.
2) The destinations and ports of call are less then I expected: 7-14 day cruises to Alaska, Western Carribean, British Columbia %26amp; West Coast: Los Angeles to Vancouver, Southern Carribean from New York, and 14-day Western and Eastern Carribean from Miami. Where the hell is Europe on this agenda? Apparently the Pearl, the ship I'm assigned to, doesn't go to Europe at all! So are these destinations REALLY that appealing? They're all in America for God's sake.
3) Rumor has it Norwegian is a terrible company to work for. Disney employees told me they hated working on Norwegian. However, I hated working on Disney. And a lot of the employees who hated NCL were in restaurant or room service. I'll be a Petty Officer in Youth Programs, a different department with mostly Americans. Will I be better off? The excursions are supposedly less demanding then Disney's 3-4 day cruises with awful screaming brats.Am I wrong to Hate my Job Offer?
First off this is not a job site, it is a RELIGION and SPIRITUALITY site. No mention of either in your questions.
2. If you aren't comfortable with this job, that is your choice not ours.
3. So what is wrong with America? At least you will be working. Make the most of it, as you pointed out you have no expenses so what you are socking away is great.
4. I would personally take it and expand my resume that way, sure it is less hours and less pay, (Why would they pay more for less hours anyway?) but again, you will be working and on a different area of the ship! Will there be opportunities to switch positions and learn more? Possible. But again it is YOUR choice, not ours.
Do what makes you happy - there are things in life besides money.
I left a good-paying job to work for the fire department (which really doesn't pay that well). I'm happy, I wasn't before.Am I wrong to Hate my Job Offer?
1) I wish I had temporarily job for 6 months rather then stay at home jobless. Anyway, you don't make anything now, so it is better to make little then none.
2)You are going to work, not to cruise.Worse destination--less customers--less work for you
3)You'll find it out.For your resume any work is better then not working at all.It is advised for unemployed people to work for free(volunteer) rather then idle at home.In your case you have offer in your area, you may leave after 6 months and still have growing experience in your field.
