Before judging, please read my entire question and answer accordingly (no dumb 1 sentence responses!)
I just got hired to be a Entertainment Host on Disney Cruise Lines. The job pays well considering I have no expenses for 6 months at sea, but a couple things bother me and I was hoping some of you could help me out:
1) They expect our uniforms to be "Neat and Pressed" all the time, yet do not allow irons in our cabins. So how do they expect them to be pressed? Also, how do I do laundry? I'm stuck sharing a small cabin with another person, and it seems damn near impossible to have all those clothes cramped in my one locker plus be able to keep clothes clean. What do I do with dirty clothes? Put them on the floor? Come on.
2) My contract states I have to work 7 days a week with limited time off during the day. But no days off. Are you serious? With 900 crew members, you think they would have enough people available so everyone could have at least 1 day off to do what they want. Hell, that's how normal businesses operate on dry land. Why is it different at sea? While others are vacationing and catching sun, I'm stuck working 70 hours a week and trying to keep my smile working.
3) Is Disney the strictest company to work for? At age 30, I want to be treated like an adult, not some prisoner. Are other cruise line companies more laid back? And is the catch that Disney is strict but has the best connections? Please help. Why is my new Job IMPOSSIBLE?
This job is NOT for you!
You will end up being thrown overboard by the Illegals working downstairs.
Do NOT take this job.
3.) Cruise ship jobs are notoriously horrible. Disney is one of the better ones to work for actually.
2.) Where are you going on your day off? Cruise ship employees are not allowed to hang out with the passengers on deck. Not having a day off is standard for all ships and is not illegal.
1.) I am positive your ship has a laundry department. Generally uniforms are issued in sets of a minimum of three--yesterday's uniform should be in the laundry, you are wearing today's, and tomorrow's is in your closet. Everyday you should turn in your uniform to the ship's laundry. Why is my new Job IMPOSSIBLE?
Wait... there are 899 other people including a roommate already doing this, but you decided that instead of asking one them for help or tips you'd go online and ask a bunch of people who have never had any experience with this and cannot relate to this situate at all?
Obviously there is a way to do this because Disney Cruises have been around a while and people seem to keep working there so just ask your coworkers or just watch your room mate carefully.
1) Ask - I'll bet they have a staff laundry someplace onboard where you can wash, dry and iron your clothes.
2) That's how cruise lines operate. You aren't being hired to go on a free vacation. They don't hire extra people so employees can have time off. Yes it's a grueling schedule. And if you're not willing to work those hours, then don't take the job.
