I just got an audition to work on Disney Cruise Lines, but one of the requirements for the interview is to bring 2 reference letters. Thinking this was going to be easy as pie, I approached several different bosses/colleagues of mine for letters. I cant believe what type of crap I'm getting:
1) One person, the director of the company I work for now (as a Tour Guide), said she would be happy to write one, but that I should write it and then she'll re-word it a bit and sign it. Are you ******* kidding me? I'm not the one that's supposed to write these damn things, she is! Yes she's nice to offer, but I thought it was the job of the reference letter writer to do that. Why would she do this? I sent her my resume, what more does she need? It's a reference letter simply saying I'm good to be a Tour Guide at sea. What's so hard about that?
2) One person said he would, and then never got back to me. What's up with that?
Please only answer if you can give me detailed responses- I'm not looking to get yelled at either, that seems to happen a lot on here! I'm frustrated because I thought it was easy to get reference letters. Why are people so Stupid?
Why did you capitalize the word stupid? Only a stupid person would do that.
In your first scenario it may be because she is busy. She does not have to write it at all but is choosing to do so if you make it easy for her. Or, perhaps she does not know what to write. Or, maybe she is not a good writer.
In your second, perhaps he is busy or perhaps he thought better of it.
Keep in mind that providing a reference may open someone up to liability so a lot of companies have a strict policy against providing them. It is nobody's responsibility or obligation to provide you a reference. It is a courtesy. If someone tells you they will provide one, they should. If you have not yet received it a polite call asking them if they have had time to get to it would be acceptable.
While I sympathize with your plight it does not surprise me that you are met with resistance. As an owner of a company rarely will I provide a written reference. Many other companies feel the same because doing so has the potential to open them to liability. To mitigate this exposure they simply opt to decline written letters of reference. Why are people so Stupid?
bottom line, they are lazy.
stupid is as stupid does
Yes, they should do the reference letters but if I were you, I'd try another type of job
